Wonder Woman 2.15: Diana’s Disappearing Act

Airdate: 2/3/78

Cagliostro, who comes from a long line of alchemists, has found a way to temporarily transform lead into gold, which he plans to sell to oil magnates so greedy they have no problem ruing the world economy with their purchases. Part of a magic act troupe that includes a beautiful brunette, Morgana, and a magician, Jazreel, who helps kidnap Diana for her pendant (which plays a crucial role in their plot), Cagliostro is ultimately foiled by Wonder Woman and her unlikely ally, a would-be wizard named Harold (Ed Begley, Jr.).

Not-bad outing taps a similar vein to the “Deadly Toys” episode – here it’s asinister, quasi-Eastern-European-accented alchemist doing the dirty work. But the real scene-stealer is his assistant played by Brenda Benet, a great talent from the 60s and 70s, but whose life ended in tragedy after she committed suicide after her divorce from Incredible Hulk star Bill Bixby and the death of their 8-year-old son. If you’re a fan, catch her in the Hulk episode entitled “The Psychic.”

Also watch for Ed Begley Jr. in a subtly quirky supporting role. He pretty much looks the same as he does now!
