When Diane buys
hard-to-find tickets to a prizefight, Sam kisses her and says,“I love you,”
and that’s when everything goes south. Diane wants to know if he means it, and
he claims it’s just a casual expression, leading both to reassess the direction
of their relationship, and decide to take a week off and see what they each,
individually, come up with. After 7 days of carousing with the boys (and Carla)
Sam reunites with Diane – but he can’t come up with any logical reason why
they’re together, except that he “lo...” That’s close enough for
Diane, who cheerfully announces to the rest that her beloved can’t say “I love
you!”
This in another
entry in the Sam/Diane chronicles, and it’s got just the right mix of
aggravation, illogic and awkwardness to be 100% credible relationship talk.
Things still are shaky, though, and it’s the precariousness of this whole thing
that makes it a joy to watch!
Cold open: To
get revenge on Harry the Flim Flam Man, Sam gets him a gift of a wallet that
ignites when opened, but somehow, it gets switched with his own wallet.
(Doesn’t make much sense, but it goes to show you can never bamboozle Harry!)
Norm’s opener:
Norm’s already at the bar.
